Highlights for March 2017 and Beyond

On Tuesday March 7th at 7PM, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok. This is an offering of the 5 sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings, in which we share. Please bring a vegetarian snack or non-alcoholic drink to share.

On Sunday, March 12th we will continue the introductory series of teachings with The Importance of Having a Spiritual Friend. This is important information for all experience levels.

On Saturday March 18th at 9:30AM, we will hold group Ngondro practice for those qualified.

On Sunday March 19th we will hold a Members Meeting followed by a potluck lunch. The more, the merrier! Please come and support your sangha.

SAVE THE DATE: On Saturday and Sunday, April 8th & 9th, Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin will teach on Mind Training and will give a public talk, Advice for Developing Confidence, Devotion, and a Deeper Connection with Buddhism. Stay tuned!

Highlights for February 2017

On Tuesday, Feb. 7th at 7PM, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok. This is an offering of the 5 sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings, in which we share. Please bring a vegetarian snack or non-alcoholic drink to share. 6:30PM preparation time.

On weekend of Feb. 10-12, Fri. to Sun., we will show a webcast of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s teaching at KTD, Karma Chagme’s Prayer for Offering Prostrations. Prostrations are the first foundation of preliminary practice. Khenpo Rinpoche will teach the meaning and benefits of prostration practice and the story behind Karma Chagme’s prayer.  Fri. 7-9PM, Sat. 10:30AM-noon & 3:30-5PM, and on Sun. 10:30AM-noon & 2:30-4PM.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28th at 7PM, we will celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year of Female Fire Bird, with special prayers followed by refreshments.

Highlights for January 2017

Albany KTC will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd, for Chenrezig. This is the first day of school for students at Doane Stuart. Everyone is encouraged to attend First Light at KTD on January 1st.

Weekend of Jan. 7 & 8th. Unfortunately, Lama Karma Drodul has had to cancel our planned weekend teaching so that he could be available for Khenpo Rinpoche. However, Lama Karma will be able to participate in the Blessing for our new shrine, on Sunday, Jan. 8th, at 2:30PM, to be followed by a reception. In addition, we are able to schedule a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok on Saturday, January 7th, which is Guru Rinpoche Day. The Tsok will begin at 10AM. This is an offering of the five sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings in which we share. Please bring a vegetarian snack or non-alchoholic drink to share.

On Saturday, Jan. 14th, at 10AM, we will have a long-term planning meeting at Albany KTC. This meeting is open to all who are interested.

Highlights for December 2016

On Saturday, Dec. 3rd, at 9:30 AM, we will hold group Ngondro practice for those qualified.

On Sunday, Dec. 4th, Laura will continue the introductory series by teaching the 4th talk, Sending and Receiving Meditation.

On Sunday, Dec. 11th, Lama Zopa will continue the introductory series by teaching on The Refuge Vow.

 

PLEASE NOTE: Doane Stuart will be closed for break from Dec. 16th and will open on Jan. 2nd for school. We will not be opening KTC until January. However, we will be having our Holiday Party on Dec. 17th at Marilyn McKee’s home, 4 – 7PM. Please bring a vegetarian dish to share. Saturday, Nov. 5th, is the last day of the long-life Drupchod retreat at KTD. Everyone isencouraged to attend, even a part of this. See Lama Zopa’s email of 10/29. Times are 8AM-12 & 2-5:30PM each day from 10/30/16 to 11/5/16. Afternoon of Sat. 11/5 will be an empowerment.

On Sun., Nov. 6th Lama Zopa will teach the 3rd in the series of introductory teachings, Ethical Foundations of Buddhist Practice, from Khenpo Rinpoche’s book, Excellent at the Beginning.

Tues. Nov. 8th is Election day. We will not be open. However, on Wed. Nov. 9th, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok. This is an offering of the 5 sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings in which we share. Preparation is at 6:30PM. All are welcome. Please bring a vegetarian snack or drink such as crackers, cheese, cookies, nuts, fruit, chips, juice, or bottled tea.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4th, we will dedicate our Chenrezig/Amitabha practice to the memory of Lou Ferayorni, who died last year on October 5th. Hard to believe it’s been a year already.

On Saturday, Oct. 8th, at 9:30AM, we will hold group Ngondro practice for those qualified.

On Sunday, Oct. 9th, Lama Zopa will complete his important teaching series on The Four Thoughts That Turn the Mind to Dharma, by teaching the 4th thought, Defects of Samsara.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11th, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok. This is an offering of the five sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings in which we share. Preparation is at 6:30PM. All are welcome. Please bring a vegetarian snack or drink such as crackers, cheese, cookies, nuts, fruit, chips, juice or bottled tea.

On Sundays, Oct. 23rd & 30th, we will begin offering a series of introductory teachings based on Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s book Excellent at the Beginning, which is available at our bookstore. This series will be taught by senior students, beginning with Laura Roth. This is very important information for people new to our center and a good review for more experienced practitioners as well.

Highlights for July, 2016

Please note: Lama Zopa will not be teaching in July as he will be away and on retreat for most of the month. Our schedule of offerings will be lighter this summer. Long Green Tara Practice and Guru Rinpoche tsoks (feast offerings) will resume in September.

On Sunday, July 31st, at noon, instead of a teaching, we will hold our Annual Summer Picnic at the Colonie Town Park, near the Mohawk River. Please bring a vegetarian dish to share.

Save the date: On Saturday, August 13th, translator David Karma Choephel will be back to Albany KTC to give a more detailed teaching on the Heart Sutra in 2 sessions. His first teaching was wonderful, but the time was too limited. This will be good.

On Saturday, May 21st there will be a field trip to Karme Ling Retreat Center in Delhi to participate in Amitabha retreat prayers and interment of ashes in the Columbarium for dear ones who have passed, including Lou Ferayorni.

May 8: Lama Zopa will give an introduction to the Mani mantra, followed by short Chenrezig sadhana and chanting of Mani’s for accumulation for the Million Mani Retreat at KTD.

May 15: We will clean the shrine for Saka Dawa and hold a group meeting to plan for our participation in the VegFest on June 4 at the Polish Community Center. More to follow.

May 22: We will celebrate Saka Dawa, anniversary of Buddha Shakyamuni’s enlightenment and parinirvana, with special prayers after a brief introduction by Lama Zopa.

May 29: Book study: Into the Heart of Life, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. Chapter 9.

Highlights for April 2016

On the 1st weekend, April 1-3, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s teaching The Teacher and Student Relationship will be webcasted from KTD. This is an important teaching for those who want to progress with their practice. Friday, 7-9PM, Sat. 10:30AM-noon & 3:30-5, Sun. PM 1 hr. earlier.

On Saturday, April 9th at 9:30AM, we will hold a Long Green Tara practice. Please do not eat meat or eggs before the practice.

On Sunday, April 10th at 11:15AM, there will be a Members’ meeting. We need you. Your attendance and participation are vital.

On Saturday, April 16th at 9:30AM, we will hold group Ngondro practice. This is restricted to Ngondro practitioners. Those who want to start Ngondro should interview with Lama Zopa.

On Tuesday, April 19th at 7PM, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok. This is an offering of the 5 sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings in which we share. On Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20th, Lama Tobden, also known as Wufang, will be visiting our center. Lama Tobden will be giving a one-day teaching on Qi Gong on Saturday, from 10AM to noon and from 2:30 to 4:30PM. He will also lead us in a guided meditation on Chenrezig on Sunday, at 11:15AM.

On Saturday, March 26th, we will hold group Ngondro (foundation) practice, from 9:30AM to noon. This group was requested by and is restricted to Ngondro practitioners. Those who are interested in starting Ngondro practice should interview with Lama Zopa.

On Saturday, February 6th, we will be doing a cleaning day to ready the shrine for Losar, from 10AM to noon. Volunteers are welcome and needed.

On Tuesday, February 9th, at 6:30PM, we will celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year, with a vegetarian potluck preceded by the 21 Praises to Tara and the 12 Deeds of the Buddha.

On Saturday, February 13th, we will hold Long Green Tara Practice, starting at 9:30AM. Please do not eat meat or eggs prior to the practice.

Highlights for December 2015

Note: The Doane Stuart School building will be closed during vacation from December 19th to January 3rd. Therefore, our regular Sunday programs will not be held on December 20th and 27th and there will be no Tuesday practice on Dec 22nd and 29th. Regular programs will resume in early January, probably on Sunday, January 3rd. We wish everyone peace and happiness for the holiday season and the New Year.

During the break, there will be several programs of interest at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra: Lama Karma Drodhul teaching on “Transforming Difficulties Through the Six Perfections”, on Dec. 18-20, the Amitabha Retreat on Dec. 27-31, and First Light on Jan. 1, 2016. We encourage KTC members to take advantage of these programs.

Special Events:

On Sunday, December 6 we will have a Members’ Meeting. Your participation is very important. We will keep the agenda and the meeting short, but we need your input. An agenda will be sent out prior to the meeting.

On Saturday, December 12 we will hold a Holiday party from 4 to 7 pm at Marilyn’s. Call or email KTC for directions. Please try to bring a vegetarian dish or non-alcoholic drink to share.

On Tuesday, December 15th at 7PM, we will have a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok practice. Highlights for November 2015

On Saturday, November 7th, we will hold a Long Green Tara Practice, starting at 9:30 AM.  Please do not eat meat or eggs before the practice.

On the weekend of November 13-15, we will show the webcast of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s teaching at KTD, Benefits of Offering Butterlamps. Hours are Friday 7-9PM, Saturday 10:30 AM to 12noon and 3:30-5PM, Sunday 10:30AM to 12noon and 2:30-4PM.

On Sunday, November 22nd, we will show an unusual but delightful video of Yongey Mingyur  Rinpoche teaching on mindful listening to music.

On Tuesday, November 24th, we will hold a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok practice. This is an offering of the five sense pleasures to Guru Rinpoche and all enlightened beings in  which we share. On Saturday, July 4th, at noon, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s 92nd Birthday will be celebrated at KTD with a party feast, birthday cake, and sangha offerings. All are welcome. For meal planning purposes, please let the monastery know if you plan on coming (845-679-5906 x3).

On Saturday, July 11th, we will hold a Long Green Tara practice starting at 9:30AM. Please do not eat meat before the practice.

On Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, we will show the webcast of Khenpo Karthar’s teaching on Nyungne, Part 2. Friday, 7 to 8:30pm and Saturday, 10:30am to noon and 3:30 to 5pm.

On the weekend of July 24 – 26, Lama Lodro Lhamo will begin her Green Tara teaching/retreat at KTD. She will be focusing on the text, ritual, chanting, music, and tormas over the weekend. This is a great opportunity for those who have expressed an interest in learning these areas. For the remainder of the retreat, from Monday, the 27th, to Wednesday, the 29th, Lama Lodro Lhamo will lead Green Tara practice sessions.

On Sunday, August 2nd, instead of a teaching, we will hold our Summer Picnic at Colonie Town Park. Save the date!

On Saturday, June 6th, we will have a field trip to Vassar College to see Karen Lucic’s exhibition the art of Chenrezig/Avalokiteshvara. In the afternoon we will visit Tubten Choling Tibetan Center in Wappingers Falls. We will see the stupa and make offerings to Lama Norlha. If you are interested in coming and haven’t RSVPed, please contact Laura or Joan no later than June 2nd. We will carpool, so please meet in the parking lot at Doane Stuart at 8:45AM.

June 21st: Father’s Day: Lama Zopa will continue his teaching on the lineage masters.

June 28th: Karmapa’s birthday celebration at KTD with free lunch. Meditation sitting will end early at 10:30AM (no teaching) so people can get to KTD in time. For those new to KTD, Lama Zopa has offered to give a tour of KTD.

He will be in our area until April 25th and will give a public talk at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, NY on April 18th. This is part of a rare 2 month long visit to the United States. It is considered to be very important to chant this sutra regularly in order to purify infractions of the lay and bodhisattva vows.

At KTD there will be four days of Mahakala practice from Feb. 14 to 17, and a Sang puja at 10 AM on Feb. 18. On Feb. 19, Losar Day will begin at KTD at 6 AM with Green Tara, and will include a feast at noon. Members and friends are encouraged to attend the KTD festivities, especially the Sang and Losar Day events, and to return in time for our KTC celebration.

On Thursday evenings at 6:30, beginning on February 26, Lama Zopa will resume teaching on the Dakpo Targyen

Coming Up: On the weekend of March 13-15, 2015, we will present a live webcast of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s teaching at KTD on Why Buddhists Are Giving Up Meat. His Holiness the 17th Karmapa gave up eating meat because of the intense suffering of animals and his Mahayana training to see all sentient beings as his mothers. Now Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, who has also given up meat, explains why it is so beneficial to do so.
